For law firms

Most legal work still arrives by referral. But referred clients now check a firm online before they make contact. The check takes about a minute, and it happens before you know the referral exists.

What happens between the referral and the call.

The whole check takes about a minute, and it ends before the first email is written. Three moments decide it.

The site has one job: confirm the referral.

A referral practice does not need its website to win search rankings or generate leads. It needs the site to confirm what the referrer said, quickly, to a careful reader.

Current

Does the firm on the screen match the one that was recommended, and does it look like it is still trading this year. A dated layout, or a copyright year from several years back, fails this before a word is read.

Fit

The client is holding a specific matter. They scan for evidence that you have run matters shaped like theirs, not a list of everything the firm could theoretically do.

The person

A referral recommends a person as much as a firm. The client wants the name they were given, with credentials they can inspect, inside one scroll.

When the check fails, nothing happens.

The client does not email to say the website put them off. They reply to the other name they were given, or they go back to the referrer for another. The referrals that convert still convert, so the site looks harmless. The cost never shows up as a lost lead. It shows up as a pipeline that runs thinner than the quality of your work says it should.
